Praise our Good Lord! The New Church Development Committee of The Rocky Mountain Conference of The United Methodist Church has approved a grant of $40,000 to Brentwood United Methodist Church for 2011. This grant will enable us to support for compensation of a haft-time Hispanic/Latino local pastor for next year, starting January 1. I have been in contact with our Metropolitan District Superintendent, The Rev. Dr. Youngsook Kang, to set up an Introduction Meeting for a new Hispanic/Latino pastor with our Staff/Parish Relations Committee. Please continue to pray for this process, and the new appointment of a Hispanic/Latino local pastor at Brentwood.

In order to have a growing congregation, its members need to grow spiritually. In order to grow spiritually, she or he needs to do three things. First, attend worship weekly. Second, attend a spiritual-formation small group weekly. And third, serve God and His people regularly. May I personally invite you to consider applying these three spiritual practices. We all have something to offer to God and His church. We all need to serve in some capacity. We need more people to serve in various committees next year. Each committee would not meet more than one time per month, and not longer than an hour and a half each time. You can be a member of one committee, with a maximum of two committees. That means we need all of you to serve. The next time you see Sister Sandra, Pastor Linda, or myself, you need to let us know which committee you like to serve, before a Lay Leadership Committee member asks you! Thanks for your love and commitment to Brentwood Church.

We are so grateful for many wonderful multi-cultural/lingual/racial ministries at Brentwood in the past several years. We have received many new members to the church, along with their contributions and skills. We thank God for that. We also acknowledge the commitment and dedication of our long-time members, who have been so active in fostering this growth. Along with these active long-time members, we do not forget the sacrificial supports and continuous prayers of our many home-bound long-time members. We are proud to stand firmly on these strong shoulders and concrete foundation. Why don’t we personally say thank-you sometime this weekend to our founders?

I am honored to attend the Global Ministries Consultation on Multi-Cultural, Multi-Racial and Multi-Ethnic Congregational Development, hosted by The General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, September 20-22 in San Antonio, TX. This was the very first consultation in our denomination on multi-cultural/racial/lingual/ethnic ministries. There were pastors, practitioners, social scientist, musician, author, seminary professor and Global Ministries staff members, who came from many different cities to share what each one has been doing in this growing ministry across our great land. A document of our findings will be written for the use of local churches and ministries in our denomination. This consultation has affirmed our amazing work at Brentwood in many ways.
